- july
July 15th att tech expo, meet lots of people, not that productive, do go with madison though, that was mildly romantic. Weird, was still good with kailin at the time. Went fri/sat. Fri alone. Sat people came. Nothing useful. That guy from ATT didn’t give a fuck about me.
July 27th give an after hours lecture on dev environments i think. I should learn more hotkeys. I was never a very good fellow compared to ian or zak. Hum.
July 29th google meetup, met bryan, too bad didn’t hangou t with him much. Impressed by building, did a pull request, won that chromebook! Haha but left after I won it, that’s cool that they got it to me anyway.

Aug 5 - addepar call, first real interview call. Was really nervous, out and about trying to help kailin get her license, trying to print shit, what a nightmare.
Aug 8 - first call with bloom, blew it out of the water. Got pretty far with bloom. Talked to them a long time, and they scheduled another for 4:30 it looks like.
Aug 12 - another interview with blom, drove down to sunnyvale for it. Did some angular stuff, quite well.

Sep 6 - zenefits call interview? No coding challenges though weirdly
Sep 8 - coding cahllenge from walmart, got the offer the next day, everything falls into place. Push back on all the other companies that i need to move ASAP. Confidence boost. Strress as I try to get my interviews together and choose a company. Also freedom finaical interview Sep 10 hackathon with george and those guys. Fun. I was a dick to what’s his face. Won that ridiculous router i still don’t know what to do with. I really should just sell the damn thing. Sep 12 - that expo down in san jose. Don’t think I got there till the afternoon maybe? Went with george. Ended up getting a good lead and got us into the VIP section b/c of how cool I got at the hackathon with a guy. “I’m not leaving until someone makes me leave” had to make our trip worth it. I’m not going to be the one to tell myself i’m not in the VIP party, gonna make someone else tell me. Sep 13 - i think first electric imp interview. I was at the expo thing if i remember correctly. Talked to david iirc. Talked about angular and stuff. DIdn’t think much of it but wanted to follow through. I think i had accepted walmart at this point. Zenefits on site today , was more concerned with that. Sep 14th - freedom financial onsite, it was too houstony, but the team was nice. If it weren’t for electric imp it might have been these guys. Sep 19th - onsite with electric imp. Oh shit now things are hhard. Needed a decision by that friday I think. WOrked lcosely w/ lisa on offer and etc. No negotiated, just make it happen. Had been sleeping on an airmatress. Don’t get too cokey dude, but i totally do. Start of bad habits with money. Oc 29 - that park party with HRX, kailin and i in our awesome costumes. That night we go to Ghost Ship, dope ass party, she gets super drunk and dangles from the cage of the mad max battle thing. She gets a little TOO drunk tbh. We crash at her place.
- november
Nov 8 - election day. Before this was the final debate, had broken up with kailin. Ouch. Watch trump get elected while getting drunker and drunker playing ovberwatch with riley. Yuck. Nov 18 - date with amy, that was fun. Went to a bar, had a grand time, a good kiss to end it off with. Nov 22 - riley comes in, we hang a lot. Try to go to a lot of meetups. He gets really sick. Nov 29 - apply for myh driver’s license.

Get lost in mountains, find little christmas saratoga. Lose wallet, cherokee flute player points out it’s under my wallet. Se eher lab. Crash at her place. Dec 23- parents come, stay the week, we go all over, show them the city. I struggle with their diet and how they’re old and somehwat weak, have to pee a lot, my disassociation with the family, etc. Go out alone with colette, fun, always trying to overcome our awkwardness. Dec 31st - spend new years alone at home, was too sick to camp, felt very lonely, day couldn’t go by fast enough, ended up just eating pizza and watching cop movies, eventually gave up and got high. Didn’t finish this thing either.
This is what my last year was about
What aspects were the most important to you in the following areas last year*? Which happenings or events were the most significant? Summarize briefly.
- personal life and family
Went through that relationship with kailin, then broke up. Still not sure how good of an idea that was. We were so close, jived so well, but was that just because she and I were both so flexible? Lack of sexual chemistry. Family visited, faced firsthand with how old they’re becoming, struggling with their diet, the fact that mom drinks coke so much. Colette stuck with that diet. I dunno. At least got to share how cool my life was with them.
- work, studies, profession
Obviously the bootcamp, working at the bootcamp, and then getting hired at electric imp. What a wild fucking ride. Hard to believe all condensed so easily into a single year… preparing for the bootcamp, interviewing for it, getting in, going through it, working at it, interviewing for jobs, getting a job… jeeeesus. At the start of the year I knew almost nothing about web development, now I have “front end engineer” as my job title.
- belongings (home, objects)
Moved into a place with Kailin, that was a struggle sometimes, othertimes nice. Struggled getting good sleep sometimes with her, damn that trailer we lived in sucked too. Dealt with huge asian families x2 living with us, dealt with fucking children, jesus god. Much better when we got george and yihui to live with us. Was nice to be so close to someone. Then moved into this place here, and this feels so much more real. 177 ortega, nice and clean and big and professional. Tiny room. Finally having disposable income means I got to get my first real gaming computer, get a DSLR (which was one of my goals last year), take some real pictures. It’s like a load off my mind, it’s an amazing feeling to buy whatever I want, to not have to worry. Just got that new credit card too. Caused me to be too dangerous with my money - only had 8 cents at one point, just before a paycheck day. Roomates keep to them selves, oh well. Did not do well to keep kailin’s and i place clean, do keep my place cleaner than I ever have.
- relaxation, hobbies, creativity
Didn’t have much time for any of that in the bootcamp. Did blog a lot. Lots of good hiking and camping around here, hopefull can improve in 2017. Can do coding as a creative activity now, did create a lot of apps and websites. Something I’ve always wanted - i never knew how to “just create an app” now I do.
- friends, community
Met all those friends through the bootcamp, jenna, alex, ramin, justin, zak, the dream team fellows lol. KEvin, too bad he moved to china and was hard to hang with anyway. Didn’t really make any new friends after starting new job, need to get on that. Kailin doing really well with the meetups and making friend groups that actually do stuff. I need to do that. Tons of dates and new girls, nothign too serious, and nothing like what i had in Taiwan. Getting old I guess.
- health, fitness
Worked out so much in the bootcamp but never really looked like I wanted to. Got my weight down to 158 last year and that didn’t do it either. Finally towards the end of this year focused on just bulking out. 172 right now and not looking too bad, that might be the secret to getting rid of my fat tanks - just building out the rest of my body. Got my lifts pretty good - stuck at 135 all year on bench, squats got up to 155, deadlifts 175, row 155. Experimented with a lot of different lift plants. Tried to work out every day at one point, so far haven’t been 100% yet.
- Intellectual
Can’t remember any tremendously influential books. Mostly focused on the bootcamp and then got cozy at the end of the year when I got my job. I think I’ve been reading “elegant universe” since like february. Obviously have come a long way in terms of coding ability, and picked up a bunch of new techs there - read the entire node documentation but then dropped that habit. Need to set a goal in 2017 to pick up learning again. Started and stopped a react course, did get through a whole jquery eventing one, did a little bit of kahn academy.
My journal mentions at the beginning of the year me getting frustrated with kailin when she speaks chinese to me. Startted and stopped the chinese on and off this year, never took it seriously, super behind in my flashcards though I tried to keep up with them on the train. Been trying the last couple weeks to get started again.
- emotional, spiritual
According to my journal I was extremely depressed at the beginning of the year, and struggling to stay disciplined. Right now my confidence is sky-high, but my discipline is lower than I’d prefer. Biggest struggle is staying motiviated to keep learning when m y life is just so easy. I make so much goddamn money, I can work from home whenever - i have everythign I ever dreamed about back in Taiwan, I have so much time to learn, i get paid to learn - I shouldn’t drop the ball.
I wanted to medidate but didn’t that much. I learned a lot about dealing with other people, about patience, etc. I learned a lot about how i’m not perfect y et. I’m still a dick. I still condescend. I’m not whole, yet. I lead along that one girl. I fucked over kailin.
- Finances
Struggled with this all year. Was broke as hell from day 1. Slowly chewed through my savings as kailin basically financed our entire life. I bought food for myself and that’s about it. Strained us. Even when I worked for the bootcamp I just ferried the money into savings rather than help us with rent. Still had to borrow money from my parents twice, and her once or twice, to cover a car payment, or to cover my deposit on my condo when I moved to mountain view.
When I first got the job, i couldn’t buy furniture for two paychecks, because I had to cover rent and the student loan. The student loan was a major accomplishjment. I have a notice in my journal that my credit rating was 615, fuck. When I applied for this credit card this december, it was 690. STill not amazing, but SO MUCH BETTER. And I make so much money. 120k, jesus. Negotiated it up with walmart and left it at that for all the other companies to follow. Walmart was a contract job though, so no wonder I got it so high, and with that offer standing, all the other companies had to just match it. I don’t even know what to do with all this money. I spend it so hard. One time spent it too hard, after i bought all the computer stuff, and had .08$ left. Slap in the face. Now i’ve reached an equilibriam. I’ve bought all the things I’ve always wanted and hopefully should spend 2017 being more responsible. Something like 25k in debt but no problems making payments. Had a tiny disagreement with kailin how quickly i will pay her back, looks like 1k a month. Shame i had to borrow what 6k from her. Jesus.
I remember having to be so disciplined before, now 10 or 30 bucks is nothing. It makes no difference. Dangerous mindset, I need to get out of it and save, save, save. Trips, those are what I should spend my money on! Investments! I turned that 500 bucks i had in stocks into nearly 650. That’s the me I need.
- bucket list**
Bought a nice camera (and am taking some damn good pictures) Became a programmer Make over 80k Make over 100k Get a gaming computer
Six sentences about my past year
- The wisest decision I made…
Was attending the coding bootcamp.
- The biggest lesson I learned…
Was that I can do anything if I really apply myself. I didn’t think I’d be a smart programmer, a smart problem solver, my journal says it in the january entries, and yet I was one of the best in the cohort. I’m a damn good programmer, when I take my adderall and really put my head down.
- The biggest risk I took…
Was moving out to California and attending a coding bootcamp, putting off income for 6 months and taking on 17k in debt.
- The biggest surprise of the year…
Was getting my first offer, and pulling it up to 120k.
- The most important thing I did for others…
Was the after-hours and alumni panels that I did for the upcoming students, talking to them about how to get through this thing. Also helping riley with his job hunt stuff.
- The biggest thing I completed…
Was, other than the bootcamp, the langbattle app. From start to finish I made a thing all on my own. All the logic, the design, everything. I’m not a copy-paste coder.
Six questions about my past year
- What are you the most proud of?
I’m proud that I got a job at an extremely high salary and worked my ass off in the bootcamp.
- Who are the three people who influenced you the most?
Kailin, Ramin, Alex. Also Justin and Kevin, George M and W. That stoner kid with the sweet camera skills (Ivan). Chris the boss of MKS. Tootsie. Josh teacher at MKS.
- Who are the three people you influenced the most?
Kailin, Kevin, Alex. Randos? Jessica?
- What were you not able to accomplish?
Looking at last yearcompass, acquiring a motorcycle and becoming a rich entrepeneur.
- What is the best thing you have discovered about yourself?
I am highly capable and if I work hard, I can achieve incredible things.
- What are you the most grateful for?
My current position in society granting me comfort and the means to achieve what I’m capable of. Kailin and my family for funding me and allowing me to do this adventure.
- The best moments
Describe the greatest and most memorable, joyful moments from last year. Draw them on this sheet. How did you feel? Who was there with you? What were you doing? What kind of smells, sounds or tastes do you remember? Driving through El Paso with Kailin. Sitting in Kailin’s house working on stuff, coffee, using collette’s coffee heater. Settling on the trailer house with Kailin, sitting and listening to the crickets. Eating donuts with Kailin. Hiking and camping with alex, kevin, and kailin. Amazing icecream at birite. Really good curry pho near the park. Walking in the dark park. Seeing palace of the fine arts with Kailin. Going to the strip club with justin and others. Meeting and sleeping with that one girl really into anime, amy, adri. Swings outside ad night with anime girl. Hikes. Hanging with riley and videogaming. Bar nights. Minecraft with Alex. Eating cereal at MKS. 24hr fitness near MKS. Jogs up and down the huge hills at the daly city house. Intense biking in that area. THe cafes in the city during the job hunt. Lazy pizza with k ailin. Getting stoned with kailin. Hot tub when I was sick. Should get more moments for next year.
- Three of my biggest accomplishments
List your three greatest accomplishments from last year here. Getting into Makersquare. Getting the fellowship. Getting a 120k/year job. What have you done to achieve these? Studied my ass off on my own to get the JS skills. Researched bootcamps, methods, etc. Worked with Kailin to move to California. Banging my head against the wall, figuring out how those algorithms I didn’t understand worked.
Was good to everyone, tried to be me at 100%, tried to be an Ian (didn’t know him yet) sort of. Tried to be a Cassie, really. Not all the way there yet.
Hit the job search like a fucking torpedo, didn’t let down that bootcamp energy, applied applied applied, worked. Who helped you achieve these successes? How? Kailin helped the most, financially by giving me the opportunity to live in california rent free and eventually lending me money. My family also lent me money. My friends at the bootcamp helped me get through it, alex, justin, ramin. Jason. Jake. Ramin kept me real. Riley kept me on my game, kinda. Three of my biggest challenges List your three biggest challenges from last year here. Getting into the bootcamp. I failed the first MKS interview… I remember struggling so hard with some of the algorithm questions. Things like map, reduce, filter. Callback functions.
Staying on task in the bootcamp, working out constantly, studying hard. It wasn’t “hard” to do, but it took a lot of energy. I think the desperation driving me made it come naturally, but looking back, it was an objectively hard thing to do. When I go to visit MKS I feel exhausted just looking at them.
Staying focused after the bootcamp, when I worked for them and during the jobhunt. Keeping up on algorithms, meetups, and job applications. Keeping head up through rejections. Who or what helped you overcome these challenges? Kailin was always there as support every step of the way. Asif helped during the job search. I mostly self-motivated through all of it though, I feel like right now. What have you learned about yourself while overcoming these challenges? I can do so much on my own, I have tremendous capability and drive, when I can point myself in the right direction. Desperation helped a lot, but there’s a huge amount of ability inside me that I can use if I can harness it and stay on top of my shit. Forgiveness Did anything happen during the past year that still needs to be forgiven? Deeds or words that made you feel bad? Or are you angry with yourself? Write it down here. Do good for yourself and forgive.* I broke up with kailin and ripped her heart out, yes. But looking back at my journal, I was worried about issues with our relationship since January. Even now I feel doubts about whether I should have broken up with her but I need to let go of those, something was wrong with our chemistry. I didn’t get as physically fit as I hoped but I still have time. I left my family in the hottub because I was bored. I need to understand that I need to keep myself entertained somehow, it’s ok. I wasn’t as good as a fellow as I hoped, but I can always get better and it’s ok. I worked from home a lot more than I probably should have, and am not putting in as much effort into work as I know I’m capable of, but I can turn it around. I really screwed over that anime chick, I need to be more careful with other people’s emotions. I really got into a lot of debt. Easy there. Got pretty fat the last three weeks. Whoops. Letting go Is there anything else you need to say? Is there anything you must let go of before you can start your next year? Draw or write, then think about it and let it all go. I hope I can still be friends with Kailin. This is the real start of my life right here, I have everything I need now to really make it happen. I have the money and the skills and the proof that I am hyper-capable. I live in a city with access to all sorts of resources and activities. It’s time to make this shit real. The past year in three words Choose three words to define your past year. Dense, productive, life-changing The book of my past year A book was made about your past year*. Write down its title. The Year of Self-Actualization - One Man’s Path to Self Discovery and Transformation. Or, How I Went from a Liberal Arts Degree making 40k to an Engineer making 120k in one year.
Farewell to your last year If there is anything else left that you would like to write down, or there is anybody you would like to say goodbye to, do it now. Bye, hot anime loving girl. Sex was fire, but I really fucked up with you. Bye, kevin and others who moved away. Hopefully will see you again. Kailin, I hope we stick together in the future. Family, I hope you eat carbs again and get healthy.
The year ahead- 2017 Dare to dream big What does the year ahead of you look like? What will happen in an ideal case? Why will it be great? Write, draw, let go of your expectations and dare to dream. The year ahead looks like everything I ever hoped for in all my previous years. I’m starting with all the tools I ever need to accomplish my dreams, now I can get started on accomplishing them. I’ll get more fit, more lucrative, more skilled than ever before. I’ll channel the energy I discovered in myself last year into bigger and greater things. I’ll travel, i’ll make business for myself, I’ll learn shitloads, I’ll create fantastic art, I’ll grow an audience, I’ll look fantastic and feel amazing. I’ll do what I can to keep things simple and financially sane and sound but take risks and build something amazing for 2017. This is what my next year will be about Define the most important aspects of next year in the following areas*. Which events will be the most important? Summarize briefly. personal life and family I’ll become an inspiration, and improve my character even more. I’ll help out colette and be a good friend to everyone. I’ll strip out as much negativity as possible and find new things to strive for. New trips will be important, new opportunities to work remote. work, studies, profession I’ll learn our stack at work and start contributing to it. My webpack presentation will blow their pants off. I’ll learn all our technologies and make good improvements and real contributions. I’ll learn a lot more computer science concepts, finish that berkely AI course for example. I’ll become incredible at web development and start branching out to new technologies, programming languages, and concepts. I’ll take advantages at work at opportunities to learn hardware, rapsberri pi, etc. I’ll go through more khan academy stuff. And Chinese (I had to come back to add this!!) how could I forgot? I need to lock this down, it’s already slipping and I almost forgot to add it to this goal sheet. belongings (home, objects) Having bought everything I really wanted. I’ll focus on frugality, outside of getting a motorcycle and gear. I’ll try to focus on purchases that add value, and fall into a minimalistic mindset. Camping gear is going to be hard to avoid buying lots of. I need to remember that though I have technically infinite money, now I need to start making decisions about whether this 200 bucks would be better spent here, or invested in a stock that could vest for me down the line, or on an object that could help me learn and improve my value as a person, rather than just improve my quality of life or bring me happiness. I do want to get a firepit, maybe some art for the walls, maybe at some point pay for a steam cleaning, and I’ll probably get some more camping gear, clothing, and possibly a lense for the camera. A big expense this year will be motorcycle gear as well as a vacation. relaxation, hobbies, creativity I want to camp a lot more. I was thinking about picking up basic sketching. I want to blog and write more, I bought that book about writing scenes. I definitely want to blog more. I want to pick up climbing again. Fencing has tickled my fancy, maybe look into that. I want to read way more than I did last year. I want to improve my photographic skills, definitely want to work with people and take model shots. I don’t really want to make apps at this moment, though I do want to learn more about those technologies. That may change. I want to cook more, and make fantastic meals. I should finish that gordon ramsay series on basic cooking. friends, community I need to get on Kailin’s level in terms of going to lots of meetups and building a friend group of people that actually do stuff. I should probably avoid getting in too serious of a relationship, there’s too many girls and so much fun to be had. Lots more meetups, and more genuine connections. I hope Tim visits at some point, maybe I should visit some of my friends abroad? health, fitness Hit 175 5 reps on bench, squat, deadlift (done), row. Hit 110 on OHP (hard). By this summer, look like what I’ve always wanted to look like. Bulk hard up to summer, maybe around may start a real intense cut. Live off the fruits of that labor for the rest of the year, maintaining weights at gym. Probably going to keep up the 4-6 weekly gym visits with short workouts, I liked that method. Less fast food “treats,” avoid cereal dude, it’s getting old. Sugar is making your blood pressure skyrocket, it makes my neck hurt. Look into climbing, yoga, fencing, hiking, and just some sort of competetive sport in general. Intellectual I want to read way more than I did last year. Lots more non fictions. I want to be consistently working on online courses, not just in javascript but in computer science in general. More meetups on those topics as well. I want to really get down some math concepts, start cranking through khan academy. I wanted to get more politically involved and etc, we’ll see about that. emotional, spiritual I want to really do meditation, get that shit nailed down. I need to get that focus, plus it’s badass. Could try doing it in weird places. Get my emotions under control, really become a fantastic guy to be around, genuinely good and helpful. Finances Hard-set goal to generate a second stream of income, probably through making websites or something. Pay off the majority of my debts but no need to stress and pay them all off. Get 3 months of expenses sitting in my savings (BIG problem if this hasn’t happened by the end of the year), start funding my 401k and some minor stocks. Really control my spending, just because I can, doesn’t mean I should. I have flexibility, find enjoyment there, rather than blowing 20-30 bucks randomly on pizza and bullshit. The money is made in the pennies. bucket list** Buy a motorcycle Acquire second stream of income Work remotely in a different country Magical triplets for the year ahead These three things I will love about myself. My capability. My mind. My generosity? It just popped into my head. I am ready to let go of these three things. Insatiable desire for hot showers. Cereal addiction. Post-job comfort (bring back the energy from the bootcamp!) These three things I want to achieve the most. Getting back my high energy and drive. Another stream of income. A motorcycle.
